#1 - Coquí

Coquí, the endemic frog that symbolizes the culture of Puerto Rico.

There are approximately 17 species of coquí in Puerto Rico, all of which belong to the genus Eleutherodactylus. The best known is the Common Coquí (E. coqui), famous for its two-note "co-quí" song that fills the archipelago's nights. Although its size is small (3–5 cm), its cultural presence is enormous: a symbol of identity for Puerto Ricans on the island and in the diaspora.

Some species, such as the Common Coquí and the Churí Coquí (E. antillensis), are abundant and adapt well to different environments. However, others face an uncertain future, such as the Guajón Coquí (E. cooki) and the tiny Llanero Coquí (E. juanariveroi), both endangered by habitat loss and environmental change. Even the Golden Coquí (E. jasperi) is considered extinct in the wild. This diversity reflects both the richness of our biodiversity and the urgency of protecting it.
